Using data from China Family Panel Studies, this study examines intergenerational effects shocks during great famine in China, distinguishes utero exposure, estimates there is a sex-specific transgenerational response. Difference-in-difference results show that first-generation male (1959–1961) associated with series economic disadvantages second generation, compared unexposed post-famine-born cohort (1964–1965) China. The effect persists third generation but attenuates, no same-sex These findings may suggest novel source multigenerational persistence poverty point to need consider evidence mechanisms.
